VISION OF THE CAMP and HOW IT GOT IT’S NAME:

As a teen and early adult, I spent my summers working at a Boy Scout Camp.
From a Counselor-in-Training to Camp Director, I discovered a love for the experiences of the outdoors and how adventure can teach essential lessons with incredible depth.
My goal is to use the things I learned from eight summers of scout camp experience to provide adventure-based learning that reinforces the principles taught in the Sons of Helaman program, especially for boys who learn better from their own experience rather than from hearing someone explain it to them. Any young man 14 – 19 yrs old is welcome to join in learning these powerful principles!
I call this adventure, “Camp Onidah: The Place of Arms.”
I currently lead online Sons of Helaman and Men of Moroni training groups at Life Changing Services as an Intern working towards a Master’s in couseling.
As a teen and adult I’ve worked at various camps ranging from BSA Scout camps to FSY conferences.
While working at these different summer camps I’ve served in a multitude of capacities including camp counselor, assistant waterfront director and assistant coordinator.
This week-long camping event will provide a hands-on way for the Sons of Helaman Warrior to better understand how to fight and win their battles.
HERE’S WHAT THE ADVENTURE WILL LOOK LIKE:
When your young man arrives at Camp Onidah, he will join a small team of men who are about his same age and struggling with the same kinds of struggles.
These warriors will spend most of their week with the members of their “battalion” and they will learn, work, and grow together.
Each team will be guided by a “trail guide” who will either be a Personal Warrior Trainer or a graduate of the Sons of Helaman program who has similar training as a PWT.
There will be obstacle courses and team-building games to help the battalion function as a cohesive unit.
They will also learn early on how to use DPAR (Discover, Plan, Act, Reflect) to steadily improve. This Pattern for Growth tool that President Russel M. Nelson introduced with the Young Men’s program will be consistently used throughout the week. Including a Sons of Helaman group meeting held on one day of camp.
Each day, participants will receive formal SWORDSMANSHIP training.
(Foam swords)
As they drill, spar, and practice, they will learn the basics of real sword fighting with safe foam swords. This is meant to help them learn the importance of practice and preparation. Later on, battalions will compete against each other in “capture the flag” style wargames.
The battalion that wins the round will answer Question 2 from the “Captain’s Log” in the Like Dragons Did They Fight book, which is, “How did you win your most difficult recent battle? What have you been doing right when you win?”
The battalion that loses the round will answer Question 5, the Lost Battle Analysis. “When you lost, what technique did the enemy use to defeat you? Is there a pattern? If you could replay the event, what could you have done to win? What drills can you do to make sure you win next time the enemy tries something similar?”
These fun battles will quickly transform into masterclasses on how to learn from past experiences and continue using what works and change what doesn’t.
Participants will also be given the opportunity to learn the beginnings of BLACKSMITHING.
They will be instructed on how to safely practice the craft and will be guided through the process of forging several mementos that they will bring home with them when the week ends.
Blacksmithing will reinforce the importance of practice, while also teaching about precision and forethought.
